The conflict between these impulses has shaped nearly every major development in Western civilization. It lies behind the birth of philosophy in ancient Greece, the rise of science during the Scientific Revolution, the secular ideals of the Enlightenment, and the ongoing struggle for freedom of thought in the modern world. This website explores that conflict.
Fighting the Gods traces the history of atheism, skepticism, freethought, and secular humanism from the ancient world to the present day. Beginning with the first critics of religion in Greece and Rome, we follow the thinkers who challenged sacred authority and expanded the boundaries of human knowledge. Figures such as Xenophanes, Socrates, Epicurus, Cicero, Julian, Bruno, Bacon, Descartes, and many others appear here not merely as critics of religion, but as participants in a much larger project: the liberation of the human mind.
This is not simply a history of nonbelief. It is a history of how humanity learned to replace superstition with naturalism, revelation with investigation, and dogma with debate. It is a history of how astronomy displaced astrology, medicine displaced faith healing, and ethics increasingly came to rest on human well-being rather than divine command. Many of the freedoms and institutions we now take for granted emerged only after centuries of struggle against religious orthodoxy and unquestioned authority.

That does not mean that every religious person opposed progress, nor that every skeptic advanced it. History is more complicated than that. But time and again, the individuals who challenged inherited beliefs, demanded evidence, and subjected sacred claims to scrutiny helped move civilization forward. The goal of this website is to tell their story.
Along the way, we’ll explore related questions in philosophy, science, psychology, evolution, biblical criticism, ethics, politics, and the history of ideas. We’ll examine the arguments for and against the existence of God, the origins of religious belief, and the social consequences of both faith and skepticism. Most importantly, we’ll ask what these debates reveal about humanity’s continuing search for truth, while providing a perpetual defense against the persistent threat of intellectual tyranny and dogma.
Whether you are an atheist, an agnostic, or a religious believer, you are welcome here. The aim is not blind agreement but serious engagement. Progress begins when ideas are allowed to compete openly and stand or fall on the strength of the evidence.
